The people who will teach you

Every teacher at this academy is chosen for two things: mastery of the subject, and the patience to teach it kindly. Both matter equally.

Founder & lead instructor

Ustadha Zainab Zifnaas

Zainab founded the academy in 2022 and teaches Qur’an recitation, Tajweed, Hifz and Noorani Qaida to students across the world.

Her students describe the same things again and again: that she explains clearly and patiently, as many times as it takes; that she corrects gently rather than sharply; and that she gives them the confidence to recite aloud without fear of making a mistake.

Alongside teaching, Zainab hosts the academy’s annual Athar Awards recognising students’ progress, and speaks regularly at Islamic education events in Colombo.

A note from the Founder

Why I Teach the Way I Do

Every student begins their Qur’an journey from a different place. Some arrive with confidence and familiarity, while others may be taking their very first steps or returning to the Qur’an after a long pause.

I believe that every learner deserves to be met with patience, dignity, and genuine encouragement. Your starting point does not define your ability to progress; what matters is the sincerity to learn, the willingness to persevere, and the commitment to grow.

This is why my approach to teaching is centred on patience, compassion, and individual attention. I take the time to understand each student’s needs and learning pace, explain concepts with clarity, and correct mistakes with gentleness and wisdom.

My aim extends beyond teaching the correct pronunciation and recitation of the Qur’an. I aspire to nurture confidence, consistency, and a meaningful connection with the words of Allah — creating an environment where students feel comfortable learning, asking questions, making mistakes, and improving without fear.

I have witnessed students progress from uncertainty to confidence, from struggling with individual letters to reciting verses with fluency and assurance. These transformations continually remind me why this work is so deeply meaningful to me.

It is never too late to begin, begin again, or strengthen your relationship with the Qur’an. Every step taken towards it is a step worth taking.

Our standards

How teachers are selected

A qualified teacher who cannot hold a seven-year-old’s attention is no use to that child. We assess both.

Command of the subject

Accurate recitation, secure knowledge of Tajweed, and the ability to explain a rule rather than only state it.

Patience under pressure

Every teacher is observed teaching a real beginner. How they respond to a repeated mistake tells us what we need to know.

Suitability for children

Female teachers are available for all women and children, and parents receive a short note after every class.

A note for parents

Female students and children are taught by female teachers. There is a gender field on the enquiry form so this is arranged before the first class. You are also welcome to sit in on your child’s trial class — many parents do.
